Beat Body Odor

Q: A friend of mine has body odor. Whenever she starts to sweat, the smell comes out. Aside from using deodorants, are there any alternatives? – Stella G. de Dios, M.D.

A:
Sweat itself is odorless. We start to smell when sweat mixes with bacteria which is normally found on the skin. Here’s how you can nix body odor.

● Antiperspirants stop sweat from pouring out of sweat glands. Antideodorants block sweat and destroy bacteria at the same time. She could use both.

● Take daily showers or baths. Scrubbing armpits with a washcloth and antibacterial soap, especially after heavy sweating (i.e., during a hot day, after exercising, after sex), will minimize both sweat flow and bacterial contamination .

● Liberally use cornstarch powder or the more absorbent Zeasorb powder to keep the armpits dry.

● Choose light-colored clothing made of natural fibers like cotton. They help the skin breathe. Avoid dark colors and synthetic materials like nylon and polyester.

● She should watch the food she eats. Someone on a low carbo-high protein diet like the Atkin’s diet may develop a condition called ketosis. This causes body odor and bad breath. Certain spices that may be secreted into sweat (and may even discolor it) also causes body odor.

● If all else fails, visit a dermatologist.

Glass of Texas wine a day to keep cancer at bay

Extracts from two Texas red wines can help fight cancer, say researchers.

A new study led by Dr Susanne Talcott, Texas AgriLife Research food and nutrition scientist revealed that wines produced in the Lone Star State have anti-cancer properties known to exist in wines from other producing regions.

Talcott said that extracts from two Texas red wines port and syrah (or shiraz) decreased cancer cell growth in a comparable magnitude as other wines previously studied.

“These results could definitely be projected to all Texas wines containing similar amounts of bioactive compounds,” Talcott said.

“And this will be the basis for a continued intensive study of all the health benefits of wines made in this state,” she added.

She said that people who consume regular, moderate amounts of Texas wine daily – up to a glass and a half – might have similar health benefits ascribed to wines from other regions.

“In general, studies show that wine may either prevent cells from mutating into cancer cells, or stop existing cancer cells from growing and causing them to die,” said Talcott.

Wines interact with a newly discovered class of molecules in cancer cells, called micro RNAs, a type of nucleic acid associated with chemical activities in a cell. Some of those micro RNAs are involved in causing cancer. The compounds found in wine interact and ‘arrest’ the cancer cells, causing them to die. The compounds also may work to prevent cancer, she added.

The findings were presented at the Texas Viticulture and Enology Research Symposium. –

Migraine ‘doubles heart attack risk’

Good morning friends. Migraine sufferers are more likely to have heart attacks, a new study says.
The study by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University has been published in the February 10 online issue of Neurology. The study also found that migraine sufferers face increased risk for stroke and were more likely to have key risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

“Migraine has been viewed as a painful condition that affects quality of life, but not as a threat to people’s overall health,” said lead investigator Richard B. Lipton, M.D., senior author of the study and professor and vice chair in The Saul R. Korey Department of Neurology at Einstein. He also directs the Headache Center at Montefiore Medical Center, the University Hospital and Academic Medical Center for Einstein.

Dr. Lipton added, “Our study suggests that migraine is not an isolated disorder and that, when caring for people with migraine, we should also be attentive to detecting and treating their cardiovascular risk factors.”

There are two major forms, migraine without aura and migraine with aura. Both forms involve pulsing or throbbing pain, pain on one side of the head, nausea or vomiting, or sensitivity to light or sound. Migraine with aura has additional neurological symptoms including flashing lights, zig-zag lines, or a graying out of vision. Migraine is most common between the ages of 25 and 55; women are affected three times more frequently than men.

In the study, the researchers analyzed data on 6,102 people with migraine and 5,243 people without migraine. –

Once Again, Smoking is Hazardous . . .

As if there weren’t enough reasons to quit, a study links smoking during pregnancy to serious psychological problems in children. Prepubescent boys whose moms smoked are four times as likely to steal, set fires, lie or exhibit other aggressive behavior. Adolescent girls, meanwhile, are five times as likely to abuse drugs. Why? One theory is that nicotine may affect the developing brain. Nicotine is a colorless poisonous narcotic alkaloid present in tobacco.

Body odor is caused by the food we eat

Good morning friends. While we are growing, you will notice that our body is changing in many ways. Good or bad ways, we must know how to deal with it. To people specially to woman, scent aroma is very important. That’s why we should always be aware of everything. Like for instance, the body odor. Did you know that body odor is caused by the food we eat?

Bromidrosis or fetid perspiration is commonly known as body odor. It is caused by many factors, and not by the food we eat alone. Body odor is an unpleasant smell that comes off the body, usually from the hands and feet, groin, and underarms due to the concentration of the endocrine and apocrine glands in these area. It is often associated with sweat or physical activity. Extra strong or unusual smells may indicate a more serious condition (fungal infection, diabetes, or gastrointestinal disorders).

In more cases, body odor is due to poor hygiene practices. This condition can be corrected by frequent and proper bathing and the use of deodorants and/or antiperspirants. The entire body should be washed with soap and water. Drying the whole body thoroughly after taking a bath will also help since the microorganisms that can cause body odor thrive well when moisture is present. Wearing clean clothes and undergarments, and eating a well balanced died also helps in preventing body odor.

Ear Wax

Good morning everyone. The cleanliness with ourselves will result to a better condition of our body. Even if it can’t be seen by other people. Like our ears. Did you know that removing ear wax everyday is a good for the ear?

Human ear is a very delicate organ that serves as our sense for hearing. It is also responsible for maintaining balance. Insertion of any sharp object into the ear canal may result to infection and harm the eardrum.

Usually many people clean their ears as a habit; they clean their ears everyday to remove the ear wax produced. Ear wax which line the canal serves to filter the dust that is carried by ear; the dust is caught by the wax.

People often use cotton buds with plastic, wood, and paper handles in removing ear wax. This habit may cause perforation or puncture of the eardrum which can cause total loss of hearing. Sometimes a punctured eardrum heals naturally, but sometimes it remains punctured permanently. Doctors have developed techniques for repairing punctured eardrums through grafting or inducing the growth of epithelium to fill the opening.

In addition, accumulation of ear was in the ear canal causes partial loss of hearing. This substance is secreted by the walls of the ear canal to prevent the skin from drying up and flaking. Cleaning of the ear canal to restore full hearing is usually done by a physician. – Bato Balani

Simple remedies to prevent Swine Flu (2 of 2)

Home-based items

● If you can bear the pungent smell and taste of Garlic then taking two raw pods of garlic in the morning with warm water will build resistance.

● Camphor or Karpoor can be swallowed once a month. While the adults can swallow it with water, the children can be made to take it by mixing the powder with mashed potato or banana. But this must be only taken once a month and not frequently.

● If you are not repulsed by milk then you can drink a glass of warm milk with a small measure of turmeric added to it in the nights.

● Citrus fruits rich in Vit C one of the most common remedies advised for the common cold too can help prevent Swine flu.

Alternative medicines

● Homeopathic medicines like Pyrogenium 200 and Inflenzium 200 can taken in doses of 5 tablets three times a day or two-three drops three times a day. Even though they are not specifically made for the H1N1 it can act as a preventive agent against common flu.

Exercise and Simple practices

● Go for morning walks or jogs. If you have been putting it away just because you thought obesity was not a threat, here comes swine flu to help you get off the bed and exercise. Yoga and Pranayam (breathing exercises) under the guidance of a master is the best option.

● Of course habits like washing hands often or keeping a hand sanitizer with you all the time could go a long way. – Oneindia

Simple remedies to prevent Swine Flu (1 of 2)

Swine Flu or the H1N1 virus may not have affected all the of country, but the scare and the panic is definitely something that is haunting the general public.

It is important to noted that contracting Swine Flu can be prevented just as easily as keeping a common flu or cold at bay. It all comes down to basic practices and economic remedies. A flu can only affect when there is lack of immunity in the body. So here are a few steps to improve your immunity.

Common Herbs or Plants

● Tulsi or Holy Basil: The herb which is probably the most commonly seen plant in Indian households is there for more than just poojas. When ingested either as paste or juice, the herb can not only heighten your immunity by building resistance it can also speed up the recovery process of an affected person. Simplest way to get these benefits is eating five washed leaves every day.

● Aloe Vera, not only a commonly available plant but also a commonly used ingredient in medicines and in cosmetics too can help boost immunity. By extracting a teaspoon of the gel from the sap of its cactus like leaves mixed with water can not only work against Swine flu but also help your skin glow and do away with joint pains.
● Giloi, a commonly available plant in many regions too boosts immunity. The herb (1 foot long branch) combined with Tulsi ( six leaves) must be boiled with water for 10 to 15 minutes and allowed to be cooled. Some black pepper and sendha (salt used during religious fasts), rock or black salt, or Misri (crystalised sugar) added to the concoction and ingested when warm helps keep H1N1 away. If the herb is not available you can buy giloi powder from Hamdard or others, and a similar drink can be made.

Act Now to Make a Diffrence

“Women today live by the myth that they can clean everything up after the age of 40. So at 40, they walk into my office like it’s a warranty station and say, “Here I am! Fix me!” –Pamela Peeke, M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and Author of Fight Fat After Forty (Viking Press).

The average 30-years-old has an unprecedented chance to live to 100—if she takes care of herself. “But what’s relevant to her now,” says Dr. Peeke, “is sliding into a pair of size 2 jeans every morning, finding the love of her life or scoring an excellent career.” True, you can develop heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer long before you’re a centenarian. But you’ll lower your risk fo all of these disorders by following one simple prescription: “Avoid smoking, eat well and exercise,” says Dr. Mosca. “All the fancy research we can come up with is never going to change that.” (Sound easier said than done?

Diet Soda Reduces Kidney Stone

Good morning everyone. I read one article about diet soda. There’s a good news to those who love do drink diet soda. Most specially to those who goes on a diet.

According to a new study drinking diet soda may reduce the risk of forming kidney stones.

The researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, suggests that the citrate and malate content in commonly consumed sodas may be sufficient to inhibit the development of calcium stones.

Increased alkalinity is proven to augment citraturia, a known factor for calcium stones. Malate increases the amount of alkali delivered. The researchers measured the citrate and malate content of 15 popular diet sodas.

They found that Diet Sunkist Orange contained the greatest amount of total alkali and Diet 7-Up had the greatest amount of citrate as alkali. The American Urological Association has warned people not to put all their faith in diet drinks.

This study by no means suggests that patients with recurrent kidney stones should trade in their water bottles for soda cans. However, this study suggests instead that patients with stone disease who do not drink soda may benefit from moderate consumption.

Aspirin can cut cancer risk in over 40s

Good morning everyone. Even it’s only a small tablet, it’s very useful not only to hose who have heart ailments but also it cuts cancer risk. I want to share with you what I have read about the aspirin. I’m sure most of you are aware of this tablet.

A new study says that a daily dose of aspirin in your 40s could cut the risk of developing cancer later in life, a new study claims.

Lancet Oncology advise taking aspirin at any age before cancer begins to develop – and for at least ten years it would maximize the drug’s potential to prevent the fatal disease.

The drug blocks the effects of the COX enzymes – proteins involved in inflammation and found at unusually high levels in several types of cancer.

Professor Jack Cuzick of the Cancer Research UK Centre for Epidemiology at Queen Mary, University of London, said: “Taking aspirin regularly in your mid-40s could maximize the effect this drug has on preventing cancer. Taking aspirin at this age, which is about the time pre-cancerous lesions usually begin to develop, may be the best time to stop the disease progressing.
